World Water Day : Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement

Sopore March 22: On the day of International Water Day With an aim of creating awareness on conservation of water & water bodies, the Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement in collaboration with Municipal Council Sopore and Central Auqaf Committee Tarzoo organised an awareness camp in Tarzoo area of Sopore on Tuesday.

Chairman RTI Movement Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat gave a detailed presentation on conservation and preservation of water bodies especially the Wullar lake and Jhelum river. He spoke about the importance of world water day which is commemorated on March 22nd every year. He said solid and liquid waste are a great threat to water bodies in Kashmir and appealed to people to undertake in house composting of kitchen waste and other biodegradable waste.

“Wullar and Jhelum are the two water bodies that are under threat due to solid and liquid waste accumulation. I urged upon Municipal Council Sopore to undertake scientific waste management in the area as per MSW Rules 2016” said Dr Raja Muzaffar

President of MC Sopore Masarat Kar said that water was of great importance for sustenance of human life , she assured the local Auqaf Committee that a scientific waste management plant would be set up in the area soon. Vice President MC Sopore Mohammad Yousuf Radoo assured residents of Tarzoo that Sopore Municipality would look and explore an alternate area to create a scientific landfill site for waste management. CEO MC Sopore Tariq Reshi , RTI Movement District Coordinator Sirajudin Salam , Patron Central Auqaf Committee Tarzoo Ajaz Ahmad Dar and Chairman Abdul Subhan also spoke on the occasion.
